Bernalillo County recently updated our Technical Standards and as part of this update, we developed our Green Stormwater Infrastructure/Low Impact Development (GSI/LID) Standards. GSI/LID is a set of methods that detain, disperse, attenuate, infiltrate, and/or filter stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces such as streets, sidewalks, rooftops, and parking areas. It is a decentralized approach to stormwater management that captures and treats stormwater runoff as close to the source as possible by leveraging natural processes.

Bernalillo County’s Stormwater Quality Program and Water Conservation Program are both strongly supportive of GSI/LID. We are one of several organizations that are working to normalize the practice of GSI in the Middle Rio Grande watershed. We wanted to be able to provide developers and designers with design criteria for arid-adapted GSI to support our goal of seeing it integrated into new and re- development projects in the county. We also wanted our staff to be able to better evaluate the design and construction of GSI features. Having GSI/LID standards is a significant step toward this goal.
